What is Pain Reprocessing Therapy?

Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is a cutting-edge, neuroscience-based approach designed to help people reduce or eliminate chronic pain by retraining the brain to interpret pain signals accurately. Chronic pain often involves the brain misinterpreting safe signals as danger, keeping you stuck in a cycle of pain.

PRT helps you understand the mind-body connection in chronic pain and guides you through gentle, effective practices to shift your nervous system, reduce fear and focus on pain, and support your body’s natural healing processes.

Traditionally, chronic pain has been seen as a problem in the body, with treatments focused on physical causes. New research suggests that the brain itself can generate pain even after an injury has healed or without any injury at all, and that people can learn to reduce this pain. This approach does not mean the pain isn’t real — rather, it highlights that if the brain contributes to pain, targeting the brain may offer effective solutions.

How PRT Helps Reduce Pain and Restore Calm

PRT offers a holistic, empowering path to chronic pain recovery, with benefits including:

  • Reduction in chronic pain symptoms
  • Decreased fear and anxiety related to pain
  • Increased confidence in daily activities and movement
  • Improved mood and quality of life
  • Restored sense of safety within your body

A study published in JAMA Psychiatry on September 29, 2021, and funded by the NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), examined a treatment called Pain Reprocessing Therapy. The study found that two-thirds of participants with mild to moderate chronic back pain reported being mostly or completely pain-free after treatment. These results suggest that people can learn to reduce the brain activity that contributes to certain types of chronic pain, even when the pain persists after an injury has healed or occurs without a clear physical cause.
