Neuroplasticity and Healing

For many years, medical professionals believed that the brain became fixed and unable to change after a certain age. We now know that this is not true. Research on neuroplasticity has shown that the brain is continually adapting and changing throughout life in response to experiences, learning, habits, relationships, stress, and even injury.

Neuroplasticity helps explain how people can learn new skills, build healthier habits, strengthen coping strategies, and recover from emotional and physical trauma. It also helps explain how unhealthy patterns can develop and become reinforced over time. Whether someone is recovering from an MVA, PTSD, anxiety, depression, chronic stress, or another psychological injury, the brain has the ability to adapt and reorganize itself. This is one reason therapy can be so effective. Therapeutic approaches such as CBT and EMDR can help target specific experiences, emotional responses, and behavioural patterns, supporting the brain in developing healthier pathways and responses over time.

For example, EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, helps desensitize memories that generate strong emotional and sometimes physical reactions, ranging from traumatic experiences to less distressing but still impactful events. By drawing on the brain’s natural ability to heal and adapt through neuroplasticity, EMDR helps reprocess and reorganize how memories are stored, creating healthier neural pathways and reducing emotional intensity over time.

Likewise, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, also uses the brain’s ability to reorganize and adapt. CBT helps individuals identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, beliefs, and behaviours that may contribute to anxiety, depression, trauma responses, or other emotional difficulties. Over time, CBT supports the development of healthier coping strategies, more balanced thinking patterns, and improved emotional regulation. As these new patterns are practiced consistently, the brain strengthens these pathways, making healthier responses feel more natural and automatic over time.

Types of Neuroplasticity (Structural vs. Functional)

Structural Neuroplasticity

Refers to the brain’s ability to physically redesign and strengthen itself by building new neural connections and adapting to new experiences and environments. This can include strengthening existing pathways, forming new connections, and improving communication between different parts of the brain. These physical changes often happen gradually through repetition, learning, therapy, exercise, mindfulness, and healthy routines. Factors such as chronic stress, age, trauma, sleep difficulties, and physical health can affect how easily the brain adapts, which is one reason many therapies take time and consistency. Therapists often encourage people to practice therapeutic techniques between sessions, engage in physical activity, improve sleep habits, and strengthen focus and memory skills to support these changes.

Functional Neuroplasticity

Refers to changes in how the brain functions and communicates. Rather than changing the physical size of the brain, this type of neuroplasticity involves the brain becoming more efficient and adaptable. Different areas of the brain can develop new functional roles, improve coordination, and respond differently to emotional stress, memories, behaviours, and daily challenges. For example, therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, help people identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns while building healthier emotional and behavioural responses. EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, also supports functional neuroplasticity by helping the brain process distressing memories differently, reducing the emotional and physical intensity connected to them over time.

Both structural and functional neuroplasticity work together. As healthier coping skills, routines, and thought patterns are practiced repeatedly, the brain begins to strengthen and reinforce these pathways. Over time, these changes can support improved emotional regulation, healthier behaviours, greater resilience, and healing.
