About Joanna Zieminski, Registered Psychologist
Joanna is a Registered Psychologist and Certified Cognitive Behavioral Therapist who works primarily with adults. She has 15 years of clinical experience following her Master’s Degree in Psychology, obtained in Poland. Although her work is informed by Sensorimotor Therapy, Gottman Therapy, and EMDR, she primarily achieves results with her clients using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and by teaching her clients how their thoughts influence their moods, behaviors, and perceptions. She supports her clients in learning and practicing new strategies and techniques to deal with stress, in all its manifestations, and to regain control of their lives. She specializes in treating a wide range of issues including anxiety disorders, depression, stress, relationship issues, and trauma.
She also specializes in treating insomnia using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). Insomnia affects 15-33% of the population improves sleep in 70-80% of clients. CBT-I is now considered the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia due to its superior long-term efficacy, lack of side effects, and patient preference compared to sedative-hypnotics, which are associated with significant side effects and risks. CBT-I is more effective than sleeping pills and reduces or eliminates their use by the vast majority of clients and is more effective at reducing depression than antidepressant medication alone in depressed patients with insomnia. It also improves other co-morbidities, including pain and fibromyalgia, substance abuse, PTSD, and menopausal hot flashes.
