ExoMind vs TMS: What’s the Difference?
If you have been researching brain stimulation treatment, you may have come across the terms TMS, rTMS, and ExoMind™. While these terms are related, they do not all mean exactly the same thing.
At PsychSolutions in Edmonton, we offer ExoMind™, a brain stimulation system that uses Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, technology. We offer ExoMind™ within a broader mental wellness and psychological care model, with treatment plans based on each person’s individual needs, goals, and clinical circumstances.
Understanding the difference between TMS and ExoMind™ can help you decide whether brain stimulation may be something worth exploring.
What Is TMS and How Does It Work?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is a non invasive form of brain stimulation. It uses controlled magnetic pulses to influence activity in targeted areas of the brain and the neural networks connected with them.
TMS has been researched for decades and has an established evidence base, particularly for Major Depressive Disorder. It has also been studied and approved for anxiety with MDD, OCD, and excessive eating problems.
TMS is not a single treatment protocol. Different devices, stimulation parameters, treatment schedules, clinical goals, and assessment processes may be used depending on the person and the treatment setting.
Clinical TMS is often considered when someone is experiencing significant or persistent psychiatric symptoms. The appropriate treatment approach depends on the individual’s clinical needs and the specific indication for which a device and protocol are authorized.
What Is ExoMind™?
ExoMind™ is a brain stimulation system that uses Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation technology.
At PsychSolutions, ExoMind™ is offered as part of our broader approach to mental wellness and brain based care. We recognize that changes in concentration, motivation, emotional regulation, mental energy, and cognitive clarity can occur for many different reasons.
For some people, these concerns may occur alongside depression or anxiety. For others, they may be associated with prolonged stress, burnout, sleep disruption, mental fatigue, or other factors affecting daily functioning.
ExoMind™ may be considered as an additional treatment option for appropriate individuals following clinical screening and assessment.

ExoMind™ vs Clinical TMS: What Is the Difference?
The simplest way to understand the relationship is that Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is the broader technology, while ExoMind™ is a specific TMS based brain stimulation system.
Although both use magnetic stimulation, they are not necessarily used in the same way. The treatment experience can differ based on the technology, stimulation parameters, treatment protocol, treatment goals, assessment process, treatment schedule, and how brain stimulation is incorporated into a person’s overall care.
Clinical TMS is used in medical and psychiatric settings for specific clinical indications, depending on the device, treatment protocol, jurisdiction, and regulatory authorization.
At PsychSolutions, ExoMind™ is offered within a broader mental wellness model for adults who are interested in supporting areas such as emotional regulation, focus, mental clarity, stress management, and cognitive functioning.
This distinction is important. ExoMind™ is not intended to replace psychotherapy, psychiatric care, medication, or other medical treatment when these are clinically indicated. It is also not intended to serve as a stand alone treatment for severe or acute mental health concerns.
Instead, ExoMind™ may be considered as one component of a broader approach to mental and brain wellness. At PsychSolutions, our mental health professionals can assess your needs and determine whether ExoMind™ may be appropriate alongside psychological care or whether another form of treatment would be better suited to your needs.
If you have a diagnosed mental health condition, significant or worsening symptoms, or concerns that require psychiatric, psychological, or medical treatment, appropriate clinical assessment should come first.
A Personalized Approach
At PsychSolutions, we place particular emphasis on assessment, individualized treatment goals, symptom monitoring, and integration with psychological care when appropriate.
This allows us to view brain stimulation as one part of a person’s overall care rather than as a stand alone solution. Our goal is to make sure that the approach matches the person’s needs, goals, and level of clinical support required.
ExoMind™ builds on decades of research into Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, while research specifically examining the ExoMind™ system and its protocols is newer and continues to develop.
How Does the ExoMind™ Technology Differ?
Another difference between TMS systems is the technology and treatment experience.
Clinical TMS delivers repeated magnetic pulses through an applicator or coil positioned against the scalp. During treatment, people may hear a clicking or tapping sound and feel a tapping sensation. Some people experience temporary scalp discomfort, sensitivity, or headaches, although experiences vary.
ExoMind™ uses ExoTMS™ technology with a specialized applicator and integrated treatment features designed to support consistent positioning, stimulation delivery, and treatment comfort.
The ExoMind™ system incorporates several proprietary features designed to support efficient, comfortable, and precise treatment delivery. These include Double Core Coil™ Technology, ExoTMS™ Trapezoid Waveform Technology, Cool Flow™ air cooling, and an integrated navigation system.
Double Core Coil™ Technology uses two cores within the applicator with parallel wiring. This design is intended to improve magnetic field efficiency and reduce energy loss, while allowing a substantially higher number of pulses to be delivered during each treatment session. The higher pulse capacity may also support more efficient treatment protocols and, depending on the protocol used, may reduce the total number of treatment sessions required.
Cool Flow™ is a patented air cooling system designed to manage applicator temperature during treatment. By helping maintain effective cooling, the system supports consistent treatment delivery and patient comfort, including during protocols involving higher numbers of pulses.
ExoTMS™ Trapezoid Waveform Technology is designed to deliver magnetic stimulation in a gradual waveform pulse intended to support treatment comfort and consistent stimulation delivery.
The Integrated Navigation System is designed to support accurate applicator positioning and efficient treatment setup. It can help streamline the mapping process, with mapping typically taking approximately 2 to 3 minutes compared with the longer setup times that may be required with some conventional approaches. The system is also designed to support motor threshold determination, applicator positioning, and overall treatment workflow.
What Does the Research Show?
Although the ExoMind™ technology is built on the existing TMS science and literature, research specifically examining ExoTMS™ is still developing. Several recent studies have reported encouraging findings across areas including mental well being, sleep, stress, and treatment tolerability.
A 2026 review published in Frontiers in Psychiatry examined eight studies involving 182 participants who received active ExoTMS™ treatment. The studies explored a range of outcomes, including well being, perceived stress, sleep, motivation, mental energy, cravings, and other patient reported measures. Treatment protocols generally involved four to six sessions, with positive results being reported at the end of treatment, and at one month and three month follow-ups.
Across the studies reviewed, 65.7 percent of participants reported improved well being immediately following treatment, increasing to 73.8 percent at one month. Similarly, 72.6 percent reported reduced perceived stress immediately following treatment, with 78.1 percent reporting reduced stress at three months in studies that assessed this outcome. Treatment was also generally well tolerated, with 93.3 percent of participants describing the treatment as comfortable and reporting minimal to no pain. No serious adverse events were reported across the studies included in the review.
A 2025 pilot study involving 33 participants also reported improvements in overall mental well being following four ExoTMS™ sessions. Participants reported improvements in areas including mood, stress, anxiety, mental energy, confidence, focus, and sleep. Because the study was relatively small and did not include a sham or control group, the findings should be considered preliminary.
More recently, a 2026 sham controlled study published in Sleep Science and Practice examined the effects of six ExoTMS™ sessions in 43 adults experiencing sleep difficulties. Participants who received active ExoTMS™ reported improvements in subjective sleep quality at three months. Among participants who initially experienced prolonged sleep onset, the time required to fall asleep was also reduced. Treatment was well tolerated, with participants reporting no pain on the study’s pain scale. Because this study included a sham control group, it provides stronger evidence than an uncontrolled pilot study. However, it was a relatively small study and was not designed to provide definitive evidence of effectiveness. Larger studies are needed to confirm these findings.
Together, these findings provide encouraging preliminary evidence that ExoTMS™ may have potential across several areas of mental well being and symptom management.
How Might Brain Stimulation Support Mental Wellness?
The brain has the ability to adapt and change throughout life. This capacity is known as neuroplasticity.
Research into TMS has explored how repeated stimulation may influence neural activity, connectivity, and biological processes associated with neuroplasticity. Research suggests that rTMS may influence levels of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor, or BDNF, a protein involved in neuronal growth, survival, and the formation and strengthening of neural connections. BDNF is sometimes described as “fertilizer for the brain” because of its role in supporting neuroplasticity. Changes in BDNF may be one of several mechanisms through which repeated brain stimulation could contribute to neuroplastic changes.
For some individuals, brain stimulation may be explored as one component of a broader approach to supporting:
Emotional regulation and mood
Attention, concentration, and cognitive functioning
Mental clarity and cognitive energy
Motivation and goal directed behaviour
Emotional resilience
Learning, adaptation, and neuroplasticity
These areas may be particularly relevant for people who feel mentally drained, overwhelmed, or unable to function at the level they would like despite understanding what they want to change.
Who May Consider ExoMind™?
Sometimes you are functioning, but you know you are not functioning at your best.
You may be a professional who feels that your focus, mental clarity, or ability to manage competing demands has changed. You may be a parent experiencing mental fatigue and cognitive overload, a student struggling with concentration, or someone who simply feels less mentally sharp, emotionally regulated, or resilient than you used to.
You may be an athlete who has been medically cleared to return to play but does not yet feel fully recovered. Your thinking or reaction time may feel slower, you may have difficulty concentrating during training, notice slower decision making, or experience mental fatigue with tasks that once felt easier.
For some people, these concerns may be associated with burnout, prolonged stress, sleep disruption, mental fatigue, or the demands of an intensive personal or professional environment. You may have been told that everything is fine, yet you know you are not quite yourself.
ExoMind™ may be worth exploring for individuals who are functioning in their daily lives but would like to support areas such as focus, mental clarity, cognitive functioning, emotional regulation, motivation, or resilience.
For individuals experiencing ongoing symptoms following a concussion or other head injury, appropriate medical or neurological assessment should come first. Medical clearance or approval from an appropriate healthcare professional should be obtained following a head injury before beginning TMS treatment. Brain stimulation should not be used as a substitute for concussion assessment, medical care, neurological evaluation, or rehabilitation.
It is also important to understand that ExoMind™ is not appropriate for everyone and is not a replacement for medical, psychiatric, or psychological care when these services are needed. At PsychSolutions, ExoMind™ is offered within a broader wellness focused model and is not intended to independently treat severe psychiatric illness or significant medical or neurological conditions requiring specialized care.
For the right individual, ExoMind™ may be considered as one component of a broader approach to supporting cognitive and emotional functioning.
The Goal
The goal is not to change who you are or promise that you will suddenly perform at a different level.
The goal is to support cognitive and emotional functioning so that, for the right person, they can work toward feeling more focused, mentally clear, emotionally regulated, and capable of functioning at a level that feels right for them.
Can ExoMind™ Be Used Alongside Therapy?
Yes. One of the ways PsychSolutions approaches ExoMind™ is as a potential complement to psychological treatment.
Sometimes a person has developed good insight through therapy and understands the strategies they need to use, but continues to have difficulty putting those strategies into practice.
They may know they need to slow down, improve their sleep, manage stress differently, set boundaries, change unhelpful patterns, or use coping strategies, yet still find it difficult to consistently follow through.
This does not necessarily mean they lack motivation or that therapy is not working.
Depression, anxiety, prolonged stress, burnout, sleep disruption, emotional overwhelm, and cognitive fatigue can all affect a person’s capacity to concentrate, regulate emotions, initiate tasks, and consistently apply new strategies.
For an appropriate client, ExoMind™ may be considered as an adjunct to psychological treatment.
Psychotherapy can continue to address thoughts, emotions, behaviours, relationships, trauma, coping strategies, and life circumstances. Brain stimulation provides a different approach that focuses on influencing activity within targeted neural networks.
The two approaches can therefore serve different but potentially complementary roles.
Brain stimulation does not make therapy more effective for everyone, nor does it replace the psychological work involved in meaningful change.
Is ExoMind™ Safe?
ExoMind™ is based on TMS technology that has been studied for decades and is generally well tolerated when appropriate safety screening and treatment protocols are followed.
Temporary side effects may include headache, mild scalp discomfort, or fatigue.
Before treatment begins, a thorough screening process is completed to determine whether ExoMind™ is appropriate for you. Screening considers relevant medical history, medications, neurological history, seizure risk, implanted medical devices, and other factors that may affect treatment suitability.
If another type of medical, psychiatric, or psychological care would be more appropriate, we will discuss this with you before treatment begins.
Frequently Asked Questions About ExoMind™ and TMS
Is ExoMind™ the same as TMS?
ExoMind™ uses Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation technology, or TMS. TMS refers more broadly to the technology and treatment category, while ExoMind™ is a specific TMS based system. The treatment protocol and clinical purpose are also important when comparing different TMS services.
What is the difference between ExoMind™ and rTMS?
rTMS stands for repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. It describes the use of repeated magnetic stimulation to influence activity in targeted areas of the brain. ExoMind™ is a specific system that uses this type of technology.
Can ExoMind™ be used with psychotherapy?
For appropriate clients, ExoMind™ may be used alongside psychotherapy. At PsychSolutions, we view brain stimulation and psychological treatment as potentially complementary approaches. Clients can also continue working with their existing therapist while receiving ExoMind™ at PsychSolutions.
Is ExoMind™ used for depression and anxiety?
TMS has an established evidence base for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and anxiety with MDD.
Whether ExoMind™ is appropriate depends on the person’s symptoms, treatment history, goals, and clinical assessment. ExoMind™ should not be assumed to have the same clinical indications as every other TMS system.
Can ExoMind™ help with brain fog or concentration?
Brain fog is a term people commonly use to describe experiences such as reduced mental clarity, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, slower thinking, or reduced mental stamina.
ExoMind™ may be considered for appropriate individuals experiencing these concerns, but individual responses vary and brain fog can have many possible causes. Assessment is important to understand what may be contributing to these experiences and whether brain stimulation is an appropriate option.
Is ExoMind™ right for everyone?
No. Clinical screening and assessment are important before treatment.
Relevant medical, neurological, psychological, and treatment factors need to be considered to determine whether brain stimulation is appropriate.
If you are experiencing severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, an acute mental health crisis, significant safety concerns, or symptoms that may require medical or neurological assessment, a different level of care may be more appropriate.
