ExoMind TMS Treatment in Edmonton. What to Expect

What Makes ExoMind Different? Understanding ExoMind TMS Treatment

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, commonly known as TMS, is an established form of non pharmaceutical brain stimulation that uses magnetic energy to influence targeted areas of the brain.

ExoMind uses TMS technology, but its design takes a different approach to how that stimulation is delivered. The system incorporates several engineering features focused on treatment comfort, consistency, efficiency, and ease of use.

Rather than focusing only on the strength of magnetic stimulation, ExoMind is designed around the overall treatment experience. This includes how the magnetic field is delivered, how the applicator is cooled, how treatment areas are mapped, and how efficiently a treatment session can be administered.

Understanding these differences can help people make a more informed decision about whether ExoMind may be appropriate for their goals.

What Is ExoMind?

ExoMind is a TMS based neuromodulation system designed to deliver targeted magnetic stimulation to specific areas of the brain.

TMS technology has traditionally been used in clinical settings to support the treatment of significant mental health concerns. ExoMind builds on the underlying principles of TMS while incorporating newer engineering features intended to make treatment more practical and comfortable.

At PsychSolutions, ExoMind is being introduced as part of a clinically grounded approach to brain based mental health care. It is not intended to replace psychological therapy, medical care, psychiatric treatment, or medication when those treatments are clinically indicated.

Instead, ExoMind may be considered as one component of a broader treatment plan for appropriate clients.

What Makes ExoMind Different?

The difference is not simply the amount of magnetic energy being delivered.

ExoMind incorporates several design features intended to influence how stimulation is delivered and how the treatment experience feels for the client. These include ExoTMS technology, a 3.6 Tesla magnetic field, a Dual Core Coil design, a trapezoid pulse pattern, an integrated cooling system, and integrated mapping and navigation.

Each feature serves a different purpose. Together, they are intended to create a treatment system that is more comfortable, consistent, and efficient to use than traditional TMS.

ExoTMS Technology

ExoMind uses ExoTMS technology, which incorporates several engineering features designed to support treatment comfort and consistent treatment delivery.

The goal is not simply to make the magnetic stimulation stronger. Instead, the technology focuses on how the stimulation is delivered and how the system performs throughout a treatment session.

This distinction is important because the treatment experience depends on more than magnetic field strength alone.

3.6 Tesla Magnetic Field and Dual Core Coil Design

ExoMind uses a 3.6 Tesla magnetic field paired with a Dual Core Coil design.

The Dual Core Coil is designed to provide a stable and evenly distributed magnetic field during stimulation. This engineering approach is intended to support consistent delivery of magnetic energy during treatment.

The purpose is not simply to increase stimulation intensity. The design focuses on how the energy is delivered to the treatment area, with the goal of supporting a more controlled and tolerable treatment experience.

For clients, this means the technology is designed with both stimulation delivery and treatment comfort in mind.

Trapezoid Pulse Pattern

Another feature of ExoMind is its trapezoid pulse delivery approach.

Magnetic stimulation can be delivered using different pulse shapes. ExoMind uses a trapezoid shaped pulse pattern that is designed to create a more gradual pattern of stimulation rather than an abrupt change. Other TMS devices deliver a more sharp pulse that may not be as comfortable for the client.

This is one of the engineering features intended to support treatment tolerability.

Integrated Cooling System

ExoMind incorporates a patented cooling system designed to keep the applicator cool during treatment.

Effective cooling helps the system maintain consistent performance throughout treatment sessions and supports the delivery of stimulation without the applicator becoming uncomfortably warm.

The cooling system also supports efficient treatment delivery by allowing the system to operate at a high rate of stimulation while managing heat.

Integrated Mapping and Navigation

Another feature that distinguishes ExoMind is its integrated mapping and navigation system.

TMS treatment requires the treatment area to be identified so that stimulation can be delivered to the intended region of the brain. Traditional approaches may involve additional equipment or external navigation systems.

ExoMind incorporates the traditional 5 cm rule directly into the treatment setup. This can reduce the need for additional external tracking systems or more complicated neuronavigation equipment.

This streamlined approach can reduce mapping time from approximately 20 minutes to approximately 2 to 3 minutes.

For clients, this means fewer steps before treatment begins. For providers, it can mean a more efficient and consistent setup process.

Designed Around the Treatment Experience

One of the things that stands out about ExoMind is that its engineering is focused on the overall treatment experience.

The Dual Core Coil is designed to support stable magnetic field delivery.

The trapezoid pulse pattern is designed to provide a more gradual pattern of stimulation.

The cooling system is designed to manage heat and support comfortable treatment delivery.

The integrated mapping system is designed to simplify and shorten the treatment setup process.

Together, these features are intended to make TMS treatment more practical, efficient, and comfortable to deliver.

This does not mean that ExoMind will feel the same for every person. Individual experiences can vary, and clinical appropriateness should always be considered before treatment begins.

What Does an ExoMind Treatment Session Look Like?

ExoMind treatment sessions are approximately 24 minutes in length. If we include the setup and post-treatment check-in, then the entire session may be around 30-35 minutes.

A typical initial ExoMind course may involve six treatment sessions. However, the frequency and total number of sessions should be determined based on the individual’s clinical assessment, treatment goals, response to treatment, and the specific protocol being used.

Treatment is delivered while the client remains conscious and comfortably seated or lying on a treatment table.

There is typically no required downtime following treatment. Clients can generally return to their regular activities afterward, depending on their individual circumstances and how they feel following treatment.

How Is ExoMind Different From Traditional Clinical TMS?

Traditional clinical TMS courses commonly involve approximately 20 to 30 or more treatment sessions, often delivered five days per week.

These clinical protocols are primarily used for significant mental health concerns, including Major Depressive Disorder, OCD, and excessive eating disorders.

ExoMind’s Wellness Protocol is designed for a different population and purpose. It is intended for individuals who are generally functioning well but feel they are not operating at their best.

The Wellness Protocol may focus on areas such as mental performance, focus, cognitive functioning, emotional regulation, and mental well being.

The shorter treatment model provides a different approach to neuromodulation, with the goal of supporting individuals who may feel they are not functioning at their best before their concerns become more significant or begin to interfere more substantially with their daily lives.

However, it is important not to interpret six ExoMind sessions as simply a shorter version of a traditional clinical TMS course. The two approaches are designed for different populations, goals, and treatment needs and should not be considered clinically equivalent.

Who May Be Interested in ExoMind?

ExoMind may be of interest to individuals who feel that they are functioning, but not functioning at their best.

For some people, this may look like difficulty maintaining focus, mental fatigue, reduced cognitive efficiency, feeling mentally overloaded, difficulty regulating stress, or feeling that their usual strategies are not working as effectively as they once did.

Someone can appear highly capable and continue meeting their responsibilities while still feeling mentally depleted.

This is one reason it can be helpful to distinguish between functioning and feeling well.

At the same time, feeling mentally fatigued or less focused does not automatically mean that TMS is appropriate. Sleep, stress, medical conditions, medications, psychological factors, lifestyle factors, and other contributors should be considered as part of an appropriate clinical assessment.

ExoMind Is Not a Replacement for Therapy

ExoMind and psychological therapy serve different purposes.

Therapy can help people understand their experiences, process difficult events, identify patterns, challenge unhelpful beliefs, develop coping strategies, improve relationships, and create meaningful behavioural change.

ExoMind is a neuromodulation approach that is intended to support specific brain systems involved in areas such as cognitive functioning and emotional regulation.

For some individuals, these approaches may complement one another.

ExoMind is not intended to replace psychological therapy, medical treatment, psychiatric care, occupational therapy, medication, or other clinically appropriate supports.

The Difference Is in the Engineering

ExoMind is built on established TMS principles while incorporating newer engineering features designed to influence how stimulation is delivered and how treatment is experienced.

The focus is not simply on delivering stronger stimulation.

It is also about how the magnetic energy is delivered, how consistently the system performs, how efficiently treatment can be administered, and how comfortable the treatment experience can be.

The Dual Core Coil, trapezoid pulse pattern, integrated cooling system, and integrated mapping and navigation each address a different part of the treatment process.

Together, these features represent an engineering approach that is designed to make TMS treatment more practical and client focused.

At PsychSolutions, our approach is to combine emerging neuromodulation technology with clinically grounded psychological care. ExoMind is one potential tool within that broader approach, with treatment decisions based on the individual, their goals, and their clinical needs.
