About Akon Onuk, Youth Resource Service Coordinator

I am a Master of Social Work student at Walden University, currently in my final advanced year, completing my placement with CASA Mental Health. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Biopsychology (Neuroscience) from the University of Winnipeg and have earned Graduate Certificates in General Case Management and Rehabilitation Case Management from the University of Manitoba.

With over six years of experience working with elderly clients diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Dementia, I have also dedicated time to volunteering with adults with severe intellectual disabilities. For the past eight years, I have worked extensively with youth involved in the welfare system, providing case management and leadership within a multidisciplinary team. My focus has been on supporting youths diagnosed with various mental disorders, including Borderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Depressive Disorders, Eating Disorders, and learning disabilities, alongside their caregivers.

My extensive work experience, education, and completed mental health training have equipped me to play a crucial role in connecting individuals to therapy services and coordinating service delivery. I am dedicated to ensuring that teenagers and their families can access appropriate and timely mental health and therapy services.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and close friends, traveling to different cities within Canada and other countries, and exploring various restaurants in Edmonton. I also love biking, hiking, rock climbing, camping, reading, and listening to books on Audible. Being intentional about my self-care is very important to my well-being. I am committed to continuing to coordinate and support client-centered services that enhance the mental well-being of youth and their parents.
